The Waiting Game

My lunch buddy, Vivien is playing the waiting game at home. She is on maternity leave and her baby is enjoying the good food and warm enviornment in her womb and refuses to come to in this cold and chilly winter day. Everyday, I see her online, the first question I ask her is “still here?” As she is waiting at home, her friends are waiting along with her.

We, that’s me, my mom, Johnson and Alex were playing the waiting game too. The name of the game is “waiting and waiting at the ER”. Yesterday late afternoon, Alex had high fever, up to 104/105F. I rushed home from work and took him to ER. We got there around 6pm. He was first checked by the nurse around 7pm. Then we have been waiting in the waiting room for another 1.5 hours before we were called into the examine room. By the time we got into the exam room and the Dr. came in around 8:45pm. A 10 mins exam caused us to wait another hour.

The doc performed a throat swab and a nasal swab on Alex, so, we were waiting in the exam room for another hour for the results. I asked the nurse if we should wait outside in the waiting room, or in the exam room. He replied, “just wait inside here. You know how it is, it’s a waiting game”. OK, at least someone in the facilities admitted all we can do was to wait.

Results came back in an hour. Alex didn’t have strep throat. Thanks goodness. No anti-biotics needed. BUT, as the results from the nasal swab indicated, Alex had FLU.

As the doc left the exam room, he said “Alex is a smart boy!” Alex didn’t cry or being fuzzy, even when the doc was performing the swab. All he did was asking “can we go home now?”

xoxo
